How do you do your estimates, particularly if you are a small operation that might not be able to justify large license fees, or use in house software provided by a large company. Is this way behind the times? Is there an obvious pre packaged software that does this cheaply without selling your (incredibly sensitive and proprietary) data to your competitors? I was assuming I would just do it with excel, you know, database spreadsheets I pull prices from (and I can update), and then a bunch of simple mathematical formulas to calculate the totals for each job. I am prepared to build my own excel based estimating system for this purpose, but I just felt like I should ask if that's crazy, or what software I might not be aware of. You know, build a list of all materials used, track down the best supplier I can find for prices, calculate the labor costs, and start getting an idea of "what would I need to charge for this job if I were independent".
Oe thing I wanted to start doing was to shadow estimate the jobs I am working on, as an employee.
I am working in residential construction with an eye to the future, which I hope involves me running my own small operation within 4 years max.
